The word Sanjhi denotes the time of dusk and is emanated from the Hindi word ‘Sanjh’ or ‘Sandhya’. ‘Sanjhi Mata Puja’ is especially the worship of Mother Goddess Durga as this celebration falls on the first day of the ‘Navaratras’ or the nine days of Durga Puja. This festival is celebrated normally in the month of ‘October every year and is honored especially by the unmarried girls of rural Punjab and Haryana. The performance of this puja by the unmarried girls is done to assure a good husband for them. There is a myth behind the festival of this celebration that with the hope of obtaining a good husband ‘Radha’ was counseled to achieve the worship of ‘Sandhya Devi’ or the evening Goddess. Radha in her soul wanted to marry the son of Nandrai known as ‘Krishna’ and thus started making preparations for the worshiping. Krishna on hearing about such worshiping determined to help Radha in creating the images. As the entry of only females was allowed in the puja Shri Krishna went in the guise of a woman to visit Radha in her palace. The other Gopis were surprised by the creative ability of this new woman amidst them. After creating the images food was presented to them in the evening that was observed by an Aarti. As it was too late and night had fallen, Krishna determined to stay with Radha instead of going home. Therefore, Devotees chant aarti in Devotion of Sanhji Mata.
