Lalita Pawar credits her demonic image as a hellish mother-in-law to comedian-actor-filmmaker Bhagwan Dada. In 1942, Bhagwan was supposed to slap Lalita Pawar on the sets of the film Jang-e-Azadi. New and exciting, God left a tightrope.
So tight that Lalita Pawar lost her balance and fell on the ground. For three months he lost all sensation on one side of his face. His eye was permanently damaged. This facial damage with the left eye permanently half closed, proved to be a boon for the actress. She was flooded with offers to play the evil mother-in-law. The abhorrent conservatism began with V Shantaram’s dowry in 1950. Lalita Pawar’s clever greedy conspiracies continued through the SaaS Act for most of the 1950s and 60s.
Waheeda Rehman recalls, “Laltaji played my evil mother-in-law in many films. I don’t know why he was typecast in that role. In real life she was anything but mean. But off camera she was the exact opposite.”
A man of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s vision cast Lalita Pawar as something other than a wicked woman, first in Anari and then in Anand. In Anari, Lalita Pawar was cast as Mrs D’Sa, a landlady like Raj Kapoor’s mother. The film won her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was the tough but kind head nurse in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand, who showers love on the ailing protagonist. Hrishida was always inclined to cast bad women on screen in positive roles. He did it with Lalita Pawar. He also did it with his 1970s favorite Vamp Bindu in Arjun Pandit and Abhimaan.

ललिता पवार एक नारकीय सास के रूप में अपनी पैशाचिक छवि का श्रेय कॉमेडियन अभिनेता-फिल्म निर्माता भगवान दादा को देती हैं। 1942 में जंग-ए-आज़ादी नामक फ़िल्म के सेट पर भगवान को ललिता पवार को थप्पड़ मारना था। नया और उत्साहित करने वाला, भगवान ने एक कस कर छोड़ दिया।
इतना तंग कि ललिता पवार संतुलन खो बैठीं और जमीन पर गिर गईं। तीन महीने तक उसने अपने चेहरे के एक तरफ की सारी संवेदना खो दी। उसकी आंख हमेशा के लिए क्षतिग्रस्त हो गई थी। बाईं आंख के साथ चेहरे की यह क्षति स्थायी रूप से आधी बंद, अभिनेत्री के लिए एक वरदान साबित हुई। वह दुष्ट सास की भूमिका निभाने के प्रस्तावों से भर गई थी। 1950 में वी शांताराम के दहेज के साथ घिनौनी रूढ़िवादिता शुरू हुई। ललिता पवार की चतुर लालची षडयंत्रकारी सास अधिनियम 1950 और 60 के दशक के अधिकांश समय तक जारी रही।
