Former convenor of AAP’s Punjab unit Gurpreet Singh Waraich ‘Ghuggi’ today resigned from the party’s primary membership while terming the process under which Bhagwant Mann was appointed the party’s state chief a “farce”.
Ghuggi also slammed AAP’s national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying he did not have even five minutes to spare for the people of Punjab, where he spent a lot of time before the assembly polls.
Like Mann, Ghuggi is a popular Punjabi comedian. Ghuggi’s decision to quit comes just two days after the party chose Sangrur MP Mann as its Punjab unit chief, a post he held before that.
The decision was taken on Monday in a meeting chaired by Kejriwal. Ghuggi said his opposition was not against any individual but he was upset with the appointment process.
“My opposition is to the process of appointing the new convenor…I would have been happy, had my party high command called me and said they are under pressure to replace me and wanted someone else in my place, I would have myself given up,” he said.
As he announced his decision to quit, Ghuggi also took a dig at the alleged drinking habit of the Sangrur MP, saying if the party really wanted to give him the post, it could have waited for at least three months to ensure he gets rid of the habit.
Asked how he saw Mann as the new state party chief, Ghuggi took a jibe saying “when someone’s eyesight is not right and then he is asked to drive a bus then accident will certainly take place.”
Ghuggi said that suspended party leader and MP Dharmavira Gandhi, MLAs Sukhpal Khaira and H S Phoolka could have been a better choice to head the as state unit.
He said that the AAP’s leadership in Delhi did not care to visit Punjab even once after the party lost the state polls.
Kejriwal does not have even five minutes to spare for people of Punjab where he spent a lot of time before elections, he claimed.
“I had joined this party with high hopes, but today I am resigning from the primary membership with a heavy heart. For Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat whatever needs to be done, I will do that, but this party which seems to have deviated from principles,” Ghuggi said addressing media here.
The jolt of Ghuggi leaving the party came on a day when a senior leader from Amritsar, Upkar Singh Sandhu, was expelled over alleged anti-party activities. Sandhu too had criticised the decision to make Mann, the party’s Punjab unit chief.
Another senior leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira, chief whip of the party in the Punjab Assembly, had urged Kejriwal to remove him from the post on the day Mann was appointed the state chief.
Speaking here today, termed the selection process for choosing a new state chief as “fake and unfair” and said party adopted “pick and chose policy” while inviting members for the election of new state chief.
“They decided to pick and choose amongst the 20 party MLAs and other members and said they had taken a decision to appoint a new convenor. They call this election process, this is not election process it is a farce,” he said.
The right process would have been to call 117 candidates who contested the recently held state assembly polls, he said adding that heads of some wings of the party were called, yet many were ignored in this pick-and-choose process.
“I think with election conducted with pick and choose policy, injustice has been done to Punjab and Punjabiyat,” he said adding that the volunteers were not involved.
I have known Bhagwant Mann for many years, we have been colleagues and I am not upset with him as an individual, he said.

ਘੁੱਗੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਅੱਤਲ ਆਗੂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਦ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਧਰਮਵੀਰ ਗਾਂਧੀ, ਵਿਧਾਇਕ ਸੁਖਪਾਲ ਖਹਿਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਐੱਚਐੱਸ ਫੂਲਕਾ ਸੂਬਾ ਇਕਾਈ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਲਈ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਚੋਣ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਕੋਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਪੰਜ ਮਿੰਟ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚੇ ਹਨ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਾਫੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਇਆ ਸੀ।
"ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਉਮੀਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਭਾਰੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੁੱਢਲੀ ਮੈਂਬਰਸ਼ਿਪ ਤੋਂ ਅਸਤੀਫਾ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਅਤ ਲਈ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਭਟਕ ਗਈ ਜਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਿਧਾਂਤ, ”ਘੁੱਗੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ।
ਘੁੱਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਛੱਡਣ ਦਾ ਝਟਕਾ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਲੱਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਆਗੂ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਥਿਤ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸੰਧੂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਕਾਈ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਦੀ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਚੀਫ਼ ਵ੍ਹਿਪ, ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਆਗੂ ਸੁਖਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਹਿਰਾ ਨੇ ਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਬਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਹੀ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਤੋਂ ਹਟਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।
ਅੱਜ ਇੱਥੇ ਬੋਲਦਿਆਂ ਨਵੇਂ ਸੂਬਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਅਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਸੂਬਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਲਈ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ 'ਚੁਣੋ ਅਤੇ ਚੁਣੋ' ਦੀ ਨੀਤੀ ਅਪਣਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ 20 ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਚੁਣਨ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਵਾਂ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਚੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਹੈ।"
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਰਾਜ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੜਨ ਵਾਲੇ 117 ਉਮੀਦਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਹੋਣੀ ਸੀ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਵਿੰਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਚੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਚੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਜ਼ਰਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ''ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਚੋਣ ਲੜੋ ਅਤੇ ਚੁਣੋ ਦੀ ਨੀਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਅਤ ਨਾਲ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।'' ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਵਲੰਟੀਅਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਰਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ।
