Unknown Facts
Ustad Gulshan Mir, the grandson of Bibi Nooran and son of Swarn Nooran, a Sufi singer in the 1970s, began training the sisters when they were very young. Mir claimed that the family was going through a difficult period and that he was able to help them by giving them music lessons.
When Sultana and Jyoti Nooran were seven and five years old, Mir found their potential as they were playing at home and sang ‘kulli vichon ni yaar lab lai,’ a Bulleh Shah kalam they had learned from their grandmother. Mir inquired whether they could perform it with instruments. They sang professionally with tabla and harmonium and didn’t skip a beat. In 2010, Canadian music promoter Iqbal Mahal found the sisters and played a key part in their success. They initially played at Baba Murad Shah Dargah in Nakodar in 2013, and their popularity skyrocketed after that. Their song “Allah Hoo” became a YouTube sensation. Following that, songs like “mae yaar da diwana” and “patakha guddi” helped to increase the duo’s prominence. Bollywood films have a lot of songs.
They dazzled Patiala, Punjab, India residents with their talent at the 72nd birthday party of late Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh at Harpal Tiwana Center of Performing Arts (HTCPA). They rose to prominence in India with their song “Tung Tung” on the MTV Talent hunt series MTV Sound Trippin, and then with MTV Unplugged and Coke Studio.
In 2016 and 2017, they played in the Dhaka International Folk Festival. They worked on ‘For Aisha,’ which was featured in The Sky is Pink, with MEMBA and EVAN GIIA.
They made their Bollywood debut in 2014 with the song Patakha Guddi in the film Highway, which was directed by A.R Rahman. Sultan, Mirzya, Dangal, Jab Harry Met Sejal, and Bharat are some of the films in which they have sung.
