Today is the death anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee Manna Dey. Manna Dey was born on 1 May 1919 in Kolkata. Manna Dey was once the voice of superstars in films ranging from Raj Kapoor to Rajendra Kumar, Ashok Kumar. Manna Dey was once a singer who gave playback in Hindi films, although before him Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh dominated. Manna Dey had no problem in making her place among all these superstars as her vocal range was immense.
Mohammad Rafi himself used to say, “Of course I will have thousands and millions of fans in the country and abroad, but I am only a fan of Manna Dey. What is there in his voice, there is range, there is no in anyone.” Manna Dey’s real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey. He sang more than 4,000 film songs and his household name was Manna. When he came to Mumbai to become a playback singer, he gave his name Manna and he started singing with the same name. However, during his school days, he was famous for his skills, not just for singing. In fact, this skill was imitating others. Most importantly, he imitated his teachers. At the time, all his friends were obsessed with his art, and they often asked him to imitate teachers. It is said that once the music teacher saw him doing this and then he praised Manna Dey’s skill and also said how good your voice is. Why don’t you use it to sing? Manna Dey was a Bengali and this often pulled Kishore Kumar’s leg. Kishore Kumar was also a Bengali and he scolded Manna Dey a lot. The two sang two songs together which became quite popular. आज दादा साहब फाल्के अवार्डी मन्ना डे की पुण्यतिथि है। मन्ना डे का जन्म 1 मई 1919 को कोलकाता में हुआ था। मन्ना डे कभी राज कपूर से लेकर राजेंद्र कुमार, अशोक कुमार तक की फिल्मों में सुपरस्टार की आवाज हुआ करते थे। मन्ना डे कभी एक गायक थे, जिन्होंने हिंदी फिल्मों में प्लेबैक दिया था, हालांकि उनसे पहले मोहम्मद रफी, किशोर कुमार और मुकेश का बोलबाला था। मन्ना डे को इन सभी सुपरस्टार्स में अपनी जगह बनाने में कोई दिक्कत नहीं हुई क्योंकि उनकी वोकल रेंज बहुत ज्यादा थी।
