Indian singer-rapper Badshah and film producer-businessman Punit Balan have jointly acquired the Mumbai franchise of the upcoming Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK) league for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was done through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in which Badshah and Balan are equal partners.
“I was fortunate enough to find the right partners, not just in terms of business, but also in terms of just amazing people, to go to work,” Badshah told ET. “Punit Balan and the team have been great in the sports business. And I think the opportunity was perfect.”
With this deal, UKK has sold all six franchises ahead of its inaugural edition, scheduled to take off later this year. Other franchise owners include the Adani Group, GMR, Odisha government, Capri Global and KLO Sports.
Badshah said UKK has big potential. “There has been a lot of growth in sports other than the mainstream ones. A few years ago, a sport like Kabaddi was not counted amongst the mainstream ones, but now it has become a part of the mainstream sports cluster,” he said. “I think that’s what is going to be with Kho-Kho. So, I think the timing is right.” This is the first sporting league in which Badshah has invested. “My mother used to play Kho-Kho during her college days and this ground-rooted game is very close to my heart. This nostalgic and personal connection triggered me to be part of Ultimate Kho,” he said.
Balan is not new to owning teams in sporting leagues. Besides heading the Rs 3,500-crore Balan Group, he also owns teams in various sporting leagues like badminton, tennis, table tennis and handball. He also backs sports employment startups and sportspersons.
“It’s very important to adopt the right approach if you want to grow something. I have been involved in developing sports through leagues in the past and now alongside UKK, I want to play a part in Kho-Kho’s journey to success,” Balan said.
Balan said he and Badshah have invested for the long term and are not looking at short-term gains.
“We have not thought about breakeven. Honestly, whenever we buy any team, whether it’s Kho or in any other leagues, our main motive has been to promote the sport and the players. And that is a priority for us,” Balan said. “Breakeven will come secondary, but primarily if we are buying a team, we are not looking to exit in the next three or four years; we are here for the long term. That’s why, we have been looking to only promote the sport and support each athlete at least from that sport.”
Kho-Kho as a sport originated in Maharashtra and the state has been a dominant force in the Indian Kho-Kho circuit. As many as three teams from Maharashtra competed in the National Championships. In the recently concluded Khelo India Youth Games, the state won in both the boys and girls categories.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Badshah and Punit as co-owners of the sixth franchise. We already have on-boarded big corporates as well as the government of Odisha, and now these two popular names from the entertainment sector reflect the positioning and calibre of the league,” said Tenzing Niyogi, CEO, UKK. “Kho-Kho has deep roots in Maharashtra, and a team representing the state’s capital will surely help us bolster the popularity of the game.”
The league will be broadcast across Sony Pictures Network India’s (SPN) sports channels and on SonyLIV in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu.
