Jaidev was one of the most talented musicians of the Hindi film industry. Despite his talent and critical as well as popular acclaim for many of his albums, he was not rewarded with the commercial success or name recognition that some of his peers enjoyed. After more than three decades in the film industry, he had only 40 films to his credit. Jaydev Varma was a prodigy who could play the harmonica at the age of only five. His career in Hindi films began in the 1930s as a singer-actor in a few films. In the mid-1930s he took a break from films and devoted himself to learning music. Jaidev received formal training from several gurus including the great sarod player Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. The maestro was responsible for Jaydev’s return to Hindi films. When Ustad went to Bombay to work for films, Jaidev was with him. He assisted Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in the two films for which he composed the music – Andhiyan (1952) and Humsafar (1953). Jaydev later worked as an assistant to SD Burman before making his debut with Joru Ka Bhai (1955). In the 1950s, each of Navketan’s films had music by SD Burman, and in most of them, Jaydev assisted SD Burman. These films were Taxi Driver (1954), House No 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Nau Do Gyaara (1957), Kala Pani (1958) and Kala Bazar (1960). Jaydev’s dedication and devotion were rewarded in 1961 at the age of 42! When Navketan was looking to compose music for both of us, SD Burman was unavailable due to some illness and Jaydev was chosen. Jaydev, powered by lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, rose to the occasion and how! The scintillating score of both of us still looks as fresh today as it was in 1961. Unfortunately, Jaydev had a rift with Navketan and never worked for him again. My favorite of the two of us is the short, sweet, santoor-kissed ‘Jahan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai’ sung by Asha Bhosle. Kinere Kinere, starring Dev Anand and Meena Kumari, was one of the big films that Jaidev got a chance to work in. The film did not do well and hence its music, which had some lovely tunes, did not go unnoticed. Mukesh’s ‘Jab Gham-E-Ishq Saatta Hai’ is one such song which I particularly like but my pick is the title song which is very beautifully rendered by Manna Dey. After Hum Dono, Jaidev was largely shifted to B-grade films during the 1960s with the exception of Kinere Kinere (1963) and Mujhe Jeene Do (1963). Although his music rose above the films he starred in, film offers were few and far between. When things were looking very hazy, Reshma and Shera came together and with it, Jaydev’s first of three National Film Awards for Best Music Direction. Synonymous with the film is the beautifully shot desert song ‘Tu Chanda Main Chandni’, which is a richly textured, intricate composition with a touch of classical and Rajasthani maand. ‘Tu Chanda..’ is one of the earliest film songs I can think of to break away from the standard Mukhda-Antara song structure. Interestingly, the feature went on to become the signature of another talented composer, who was also the winner of several National Film Awards like Jaidev, AR Rahman.
