Unknown Facts
Gulshan Kumar Mehta aka Gulshan Bawra was a renowned poet and Bollywood lyricist who has given hit songs regularly over the years. The songwriter died of heart failure on 7 August 2009.
Bawra wrote unforgettable Hindi songs such as “Upkar” for Amitabh Bachchan’s “Zanjeer” and “Mere Desh Ke Dharti” in “Yaari Hai Iman Mera”. In all, he wrote lyrics for 250 songs over nearly five decades. Born as Gulshan Mehta in Sheikhpura, near Lahore (now in Pakistan), he and his brother witnessed their parents being killed during the Partition of India in 1947. The boys participated in a military convoy at their elder sister’s house in Jaipur. After college, he got a job in Indian Railways.
While stationed in Mumbai, the center of Indian cinema, he befriended the composer team of Kalyanji-Anandji and got his first break in 1959 when he used their songs in the film “Satta Bazar”. The film’s distributor named him “Bawra”, meaning “lost”, which he took as his last name. Bawra got her first break in 1959 with the film Chandrasena, which was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji duo Kalyanji. He wrote the song ‘Main Kya Jaanu Kahan’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. However, his real break came again with the film Satta Bazaar, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. For this film, he gave hit songs like ‘Chandi Ke Chand Tukado Ke Liye’, ‘Aakde Ka Dhanda’ and ‘Tumhe Yaad Hoga Kabhi Hum Mile Thee’.
His association with Kalyanji-Anandji resulted in writing 69 songs for the musical duo in a career spanning 42 years. Gulshan also had a winning combination with music master RD Burman and wrote 150 songs for the legendary composer.
