Wamiqa Gabbi has learned not to plan. The Chandigarh-born actress thought she’d move to Mumbai and “everything will work out”. Starting off her career at 13 with a bit part in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met, followed by Love Aaj Kal, Gabbi was 19 when she decided to give a career in Hindi films a serious push. But her Mumbai dreams didn’t take off immediately. “I remember feeling disappointed with myself, thinking that maybe I don’t have it in me,” she says. “I was on the verge of quitting, feeling it is not going to happen. I felt I will keep doing regional films and use the money I earn to travel the world, because the kind of work that I want to do was not coming my way.”
Then Vishal Bhardwaj called in 2019. Gabbi cleared the audition for Bhardwaj’s now-shelved adaptation of Midnight’s Children. It’s when she ended up meeting Atul Mongia, who did a workshop with her for three days. “It completely changed my perspective towards my craft,” says Gabbi, whose father is an author. Mongia would rope her in for his series directorial debut Mai, a Netflix series in which she plays a speech-impaired girl whose sudden death propels the mother (Sakshi Tanwar) to take extreme measures. Mongia was also the creator of the show. Bhardwaj eventually cast her in not one but two of his projects—Mumbai Dragon, a short that’s part of Amazon Prime Video’s anthology Modern Love: Mumbai, and his upcoming Netflix feature Khufiya with Tabu and Ali Fazal. In Mumbai Dragon, Gabbi is the vegetarian Gujarati girlfriend whose relationship with her Indian Chinese boyfriend leaves his mother insecure and irritable. Gabbi is only glad that she’s getting to work with Bhardwaj “again and again”. “He’s such a gentleman; his aura is so strong and loving,” she says. “He taught me that it’s important to be sensitive and vulnerable as an artist.” The 27-year-old actress is also co-lead in Vikramaditya Motwane’s series Jubilee. Covid-19 turned things around for Gabbi. She used the first year of the pandemic to hone her craft so as to “crack the auditions”. There was also a surge in OTT viewing during the lockdown. “The OTT boom gave opportunities to a lot of people, including me,” she says. “Here it wasn’t about how much market value you have; it was only about how much talent you have and how capable you are to pull off any character.”
