AR Rahman has a huge fan following not only in India but also internationally; His songs are played and loved all over the world. Musicians of today’s generation also take care of him and try to get a chance to work with the great singer. However, in an interview, singer Alka Yagnik recalled the time when she was rejected to sing in Roja just because she didn’t know about the composer.
The 1992 film directed by Mani Ratnam stars Arvind Swamy and Madhu in the lead roles. The film marked the debut of Rahman as a composer. For the film, he won the National Award, Filmfare Award and Tamil Nadu State Film Award. In an interview with O2india series, Rahman Music Sheets, Alka Yagnik spoke about expressing regret not working with the composer in Roja, saying, “I got a call from AR Rahman’s office that it’s composer AR Rahman Jo Aapko Chahta Hai has come to Chennai to record songs for my new film called Roja and I haven’t heard of that.” Alka Yagnik further shared, “I got a call saying, ‘He will like you, he loves your voice and he will like you,’ I said ‘But I am not free. Don’t date because I’m totally in, you know my schedule is totally tight’ So he told me, ‘He’s actually requested you because he’d love to sing you songs and he’s all set for your voice And we want you and Kumar Sanu you both have to do a full album for this film,’ so I said ‘Okay, I’ll tell you’.”
“I called Mr. Kumar Sanu, I asked him if you have received a call from any AR Rahman, he said ‘yes yes, I got a call and they want me to come and do all the male songs,’ so I said , ‘Are you going,’ he said, ‘no, who will go, I will not go, who AR Rahman.’ Neither of us went, I declined and said ‘I’m sorry,’ he didn’t go either,” he added.
However, Alka Yagnik says that she was stunned when she first heard the song and added, “When I heard Roja’s song, I could bang my head on the wall, because it was such a big loss. Heard his (AR Rahman) composition on the bar radio.” Those were beautiful songs and I still regret missing those songs. Then when I went to sing for him the first time he saw me he said ‘Tumne mere roja songs nahi gaya’ and I felt very bad. He just said that one line and smiled and that’s all we started working on the song.”
Alka Yagnik says AR Rahman taunted her that she doesn’t sing Roza songs, she adds, “It was probably the biggest mistake of my life, if I say career.”
