There are many such actors in film history who are remembered for their work. Prithviraj Kapoor, the founding father of the Kapoor family in Hindi cinema, is etched in history as much as for his memorable screen roles and larger-than-life personality for his dedication and commitment to the arts.
Born in Peshawar in the East North West Frontier Province, Prithviraj lost his mother when he was just three years old. He grew up in Samundari, Punjab’s Lyallpur (now Faisalabad) and attended King Edward College in Peshawar for his higher education, making a mark in theatrics. After completing his graduation, Prithviraj was on his way to become a lawyer, but failed in the first year exams as his heart was on the stage.
In 1928, the veteran of Hindi cinema came to Bombay from Peshawar for the first time. Determined to become an actor in the City of Dreams, he faced the wrath of his father, Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, when the latter learned of his son’s ambitions. Nonetheless, he started with enthusiasm towards his goal. He went to Imperial Studios in search of work and was started by the owner, the legendary Ardeshir Irani, as an unpaid extra. Recalling that moment in an interview years later, Kapoor responded to Irani’s offer by saying, “I understand, sir, what the word ‘unpaid’ means, but I don’t know what ‘extra’ means. ” He acted in the silent film Challenge (1929) and got his first break as a hero shortly after Cinema Girl (1930) on the recommendation of Ermeline.
Described by writer-director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas as “sculptural Greek gods come to life”, Kapoor’s handsome personality and commanding presence enthralled all who saw him on screen.
