Vibha Saraf is working in the Indian film Industry as a prominent songwriter and playback singer. In the industry, she is known as a multi-talented personality who performs folk songs and writes and performs music for soundtracks, primarily Kashmiri folk-inspired songs.
She has composed the soundtracks for the film Raazi, which won the best film award at the 64th Filmfare Awards, and her other film Gully Boy which was the 4th top-grossing Bollywood film in 2019. In the same year, She and Harshdeep Kaur were jointly nominated for the Best Female Playback Singer for the 65th Filmfare Awards. She also bagged the Best Female Playback Singer for the 20th International Indian Film Academy Awards for the song Dilbaro, from the film Raazi in 2018.
Early life and education
She was born on 10 May 1988 in Fateh Kedal of Srinagar, J&K in India. Saraf moved to New Delhi with her parents when she was only three years old during the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir.
She started learning music at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and learned Hindustani classical music for four years. After that, she also learned pop music for 5 years. Saraf also worked in a private company as a management consultant, But she quit the job to pursue her passion after five years.
Career
In 2013, Saraf came to Mumbai so that she could pursue her career in music. After one year of struggle, she got the chance to record her maiden soundtrack song, which was a duet with singer Arijit Singh titled “O Soniye” for the movie Titoo MBA. in 2015, she performed with Advait Nemlekar for the song “Feeling Avnavi,” for the soundtrack of the movie “Gujjubhai the Great”.
In 2016, she produced her maiden single “Harmokh Bartal,”. It was a Bhajan of Kashmir that Vibha chose to celebrate Kashmir’s culture and music.
In 2018, Vibha sang “Dilbaro” for the film Raazi. It was written by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy and it was an inspiration by the Kashmiri folk wedding song “Khanmoj koor.”
In 2019, due to her marvelous performance, she got a nomination for an International Indian Film Academy Award.
“Kab Se Kab Tak,” a duet with Ranveer Singh was released by Vibha in February 2019. The song “Dil Mein Mars Hai”, released in the summer of 2019, is from the movie Mission Mangal sung by Saraf with Benny Dayal. In the same year, Saraf also got a chance to give her voice on the Gully Boy soundtrack in the duet “Kab Se Kab Tak” with Ranveer Singh.
Music
Vibha has also been featured in her music videos as you can see in the music video of the song ‘Mumal’ where she collaborated with a Rajasthani folk singer Dapu Khan. there is one more music video ‘Jalwe’ in which she appears along with Absar Zahoor.
Apart from Bollywood, she also sang for other Indian languages such as Kashmiri, Telugu, Bengali & Tamil.
Besides singing, she also writes lyrics for films and non-films.
According to Saraf, she grew up listening to the Kashmiri folk, Sufi as her grandparents and mother used to sing these. That’s why her music is very much influenced by the traditional music of Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladakh.
She personally loves Sufi music and also wants people to understand Sufism.
Kashmiri literature such as the poetry of Habba Khatoon and Lalleshwari are among the other things that inspire Vibha a lot.
